![]() We try to show the exact way of developing the image of the Golden Age, the Fortunate Isles, and the Elysian Fields – from Odyssey (in 11 and 4 book), Hesiod’s Works and Days, Pindar’s Olympian ode 2, Plato’s Gorgias and Phaedo – to Virgil’s Aeneid 6, stressing those particular elements that were exploit by the Roman elegists. For Propertius (elegy 4.7) and Tibullus (elegy 1.3) probably the example of Vergil’s Aen.6 was a pretext, but also his own masters describing the special region in Hades deserved for those who serve to Apollo, especially Plato as an author of Phaedo (and Symposion, where love topics where discussed). This variant of Virgilian Elysium for pii vates was created in Roman love elegy, and was readily elaborated and continued by the Renaissance humanists, both in their erotic and mournful poetry. ![]() ![]() The article deals with a problem of the origins of the intriguing literary motif of a special place in Elysium, designed as a postmortal abode and award for the creators of love poetry.
